Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 18:30:20 PM Importance of Sustainable and Equitable Growth for Global Order

Bogor, West Java: At present, we see a shift in power in the international system. The emergence of new powers to change the world, and form a new global agenda. Changes in the international order can play more than just add a power-holders whose numbers are large. Changes must also be able to contribute to solving problems of a better world. So, more of a shift in power, we need a paradigm shift.

This was conveyed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his speech entitled Sustainable Growth with Equity in the Campus Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) in the Village Situ Gede, Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday (13/6) afternoon. "We need a new way of viewing the world, and new ways to build the world," said SBY.

President Yudhoyono said, now this earth come under pressure. "The human race faces a huge challenge, a future full of hope, but also full of great questions. It takes tens of thousands of years for mankind to reach 1 billion people in 1800, but it only took 13 years to achieve double-digit fold. The good news is, the world's population will peak and stabilize around 9 billion possible in 2045, "said SBY.

"But a lot will happen between now and 2050. There will be major changes in economic, environmental, social, not to mention political change and security" the President explained.

Prosperity will grow and grow, the number of countries are climbing the ranks of middle income countries will grow. "We expect the economic status of developed countries will increase," said SBY.

This will be accompanied by economic growth of the middle class. Reported recently, for the first time in history, half of the world's population can be freely defined as middle class. "In Asia, there will be an additional 2 billion people will join the middle class in 2050. It is this middle-class phenomenon that has always dreamed of and will be a key feature of the 21st century," he said.

In short, the President concluded, the more in need of food, many people who produce something, and a lot of economic resources for the powerless.

"Now the time is right to promote sustainable and equitable growth. Many define sustainable growth as development that meets present needs without neglecting the needs of future generations," said SBY.

Economic growth and equity are two things that positively reinforce each other. "The participation of economic actors not only increase equality, but also strengthen the sustainability of growth. It can also mengurasi inequalities and disparities of development, as well as social and environmental objectives for the generations living today and future generations," Yudhoyono added.

"That is why the discussion of the G20 leaders in improving the world economy, I always emphasize the importance of inclusive growth, which includes as many as possible of the people, because without the element of this growth will be misdirected. I am pleased that the G20 is now actively fight for strong growth, balanced, inclusive, and sustainable in the world economy, "SBY confirmed.

The most important part of sustainable and equitable growth detected that weather and environmental problems facing the serious earth it is real, not imagination. "Climate change is a human act, and the solution can also be solved humans. We should be able to resist the trend of reduced ecological footprints all over the world. According to estimates, among the 20 largest economies in the world, 15 of them are in a situation of reduced ecological footprint," Yudhoyono said.

"Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Russia, and Indonesia is a country with a surplus of ecological footprints. Only by changing the ecological footprint shortage into a surplus, we can achieve sustainable living. More exactly, we can not achieve sustainable and equitable growth without mentioning climate change. Both are two-sided coin. In Indonesia, many of our island and his life being threatened by rising sea levels. Increasing temperatures and extreme weather effects on agriculture, a phenomenon that is predicted will continue each year. It is certainly have occurred throughout Asia Pacific. That is why the sustainability of forest ecosystems is critical to our efforts in sustainable development, as well as within. climate change reduction efforts, "explained SBY.

Indonesia will continue to be committed to managing this forest ecosystem sustainability management.
